Today I’m letting you in on the why, when, how, and what of my upcoming 8-week sabbatical. I shared about this on LinkedIn and Instagram and got so much support along with sooo many questions!
So I’m answering the questions and giving you encouragement for thinking about your own sabbatical or even just examining your work-life rhythms. I’m getting very honest on the why behind this and the how of what it’s going to look like. Listen in for the real real.
Why I Am Taking a Sabbatical
- I’m Getting Married!
+ Building a healthy foundation for our marriage
+ We are moving, combining all the things and getting married
+ I do not thrive in the in-between, with lots to balance, and I don’t thrive when I have to do a lot of logistical things
+ Not to mention - hi, a pandemic
2. Burnout
How did I know it was time? How did I know it was burnout and I needed to really pump the brakes?
+ I started resenting my business
+ I want to make rest/sabbath/sabbaticals a natural rhythm in my business
+ Inspired by Stefan Sagmeister (he’s done a Ted Talk on sabbaticals) who closes down his NYC studio 1 year every 7 years
+ I started to feel VERY disconnected from life
+ I started to lose passion. I started to get cynical. I felt like I was just functioning
+ Changing jobs is very emotional.
+ Hard time discerning what I want and where the direction of the company is going
+ Get out of the noise and into the silence
+ Sabbath is actually a biblical practice (Podcast Episode 10)
3. Pivot Point
+ Transitioning out of client work
+ Been in business for 5 years (I mentioned this in episode 70)
+ How do I become the CEO of my business?
How I have planned a sabbatical
I tried to do a sabbatical last year. Here’s why it didn’t work:
+ I didn’t create strict boundaries
+ I didn’t have much of a plan
+ It was really only 3 weeks
So how did I plan to make it different this year so it can really happen?
+ This was a part of our year-long plan
+ 30 days is something I always wanted to do, but we added to 60 because of #2 + #3 above
+ Financial implications planned well
+ Staff prepared ahead of time
What will I be doing on sabbatical?
For me to have no plan is NOT good. I want and thrive with a plan. So I’ve got one. Here is some of what it’s going to include:
