The 5 Steps Anyone With Great Experience Can Use to Land Their Dream Job | Your Career Story Podcast with Guest Adunola Adeshola | Jena Viviano | Career Strategist

I am thrilled to welcome back to the show my friend and fellow career coach, Adunola Adeshola! Adunola and I originally met through Instagram and it’s been so great to get to know her as a friend of mine and a fellow career coach. She is someone I HIGHLY recommend if you’re looking for a one-on-one career coaching option as I move away from that. We’re moving toward more courses and other work, but I want to introduce you to other coaches I love and respect. Adunola is definitely one of those! Listen to her today and see if she might be a good fit for you. And while you’re at it, listen to our podcast conversation around race in the workplace.

How Adunola Got Into Career Coaching

As a Nigerian-American, there is a limit on the career paths you’re expected to take, so Adunola first went into PR at a global company. It was living the dream until it wasn’t. She hit a place of wrestling with being in the job she wanted...but not wanting to be there any longer. So she made a strategic plan for making a change, and executed a move within 7 weeks!

She then had colleagues and friends begin to reach out to her for help in their own career changes. Over and over! So she realized that it was time to turn this into a career by offering a solution to others who want to change their jobs but don’t quite know how to go about it.

We’ve both always had the entrepreneurial itch. It may not be for everyone. And that is okay! Don’t start your own business as an escape route. Entrepreneurship is only one career path -- not the only one! Social media can make it seem so glamorous, but it really isn’t. It’s a LOT of work! There are so many easier ways to find fulfillment.

Starting her Business

Once she decided to go after this, Adunola immediately hired a business coach to invest in herself and help her business take off. It was a great investment that helped her set up for success long-term.

She decided to try to avoid as many mistakes as possible, so she invested in a whole lot of learning. There may have been a season of a lot of listening rather than doing, but she learned to begin doing pretty fast and get clear on what she was looking for.

Her wisdom to us: Invest in someone who has a proven plan/strategy/process in the are of growth that you want or the place you want to learn to be better in.

As coaches, we are both a mix of coach + strategist. You get a blueprint from us. Not all coaches do this, but we both do because we really believe in having a proven methodology. And find a coach whose personality meshes with yours and who is investing in their own business.

Adunola’s 5 Step Process For Clients

I love to work with people who have been at a job, realize it’s time for a change, but don’t know how to get there. They’re ready for support and I’m ready to give it.

Step One: Crystal Clear Clarity

A lot of people come to me with a general outline, a box of where they want to go. I help them get really specific about that. Together, we “fill the box.”

What are the things you want in that role?
Where do you feel like you can really make an impact?
What kind of company culture do you want?
What type of company do you want to be a part of?

Step Two: Change Your Story

Most people tell you to make your resume results-oriented...but they don’t tell you how to actually do that! I help people change their story from focused on what they’ve done or are doing to talking about themself in a way that matters to future company. We start focusing on what you want to do next and communicate toward that next role in the way you tell your career story.

Mindset matters so much here. We do work on that throughout the process, because it impacts every step.

Step Three: Copy the Culture

Start to think about what kind of culture aligns with you -- you’ve been getting clear on that. When you’re applying for roles at these companies, begin to copy their language. Know what their values are, what kind of personality traits they’re looking for, and show how you’re a fit for their culture. Speak to it in your process. Don’t spend all your time focused on generic keywords. Pay attention to their specific company culture to sell yourself and to determine if you want to be there.

We want you to find a culture you love, not to come back to us to find another job because you landed at a place with the same culture that you were trying to leave! It is your right to ask hard questions and get the information you need when interviewing. You can find the company that aligns with your values and your career goals. Keep your mind on abundance and not scarcity.

Step Four: Get Into the Nitty Gritty

Time to connect with real humans! Adunola teaches her clients how to bypass the ATS System and the competition by connecting with real human beings. It’s easier than you think! But there is a definite process to do it well. She walks you through how to apply directly, how to network authentically, and how to find success in your job search by connecting with actual people.

Step Five: Closing the Loop

The last step Adunola has clients take is to communicate their value and experience. Specifically, how is your experience valuable to the company’s specific needs, goals, and that specific role? Help them see how your experience can be leveraged for them, rather than just listing your experience. You have to learn to know the value you bring and then communicate it as you job search and stand in your value with confidence.

What is the Biggest Lesson You’ve Learned About People?

Adunola says that the one thing that always remains the same, from entry-level career people to CEOs, is self-doubt. Both of us see this and we so long for each of you to know your value, walk in confidence, and not give in to imposter syndrome as you go through your career.

Don’t let a bad work experience or poor leadership deteriorate your confidence. You are always good enough. Own that!

“I am so passionate about helping people realize that not only can you get the job you want – you are good enough.”

Quoteable

“It was my dream job...until it wasn’t.”

“You always have a choice.”

“I am so passionate about helping people realize that not only can you get the job you want – you are good enough.”
