I'm here to make sure you become irresistible to recruiters and hiring managers. In an extremely competitive marketplace, I can show you how to take back control of the job search, become a stand-out candidate and ultimately land you your dream career. Oh, and I promise to make the process fun. Yes, fun.

I'm Jena

I honestly had no idea it was Labor Day.

Until my mother asked me what I was doing for the holiday, it hadn’t even crossed my mind that the country was taking off yesterday.  See, when you own your own business, the lines get rather blurred. There is beauty in that because you can make your own schedule, but if you’re not careful, the hustle becomes 24/7/365 and you start to fall out of love doing the work that you once enjoyed.

And that, quite frankly, is dumb.

I haven’t quite mastered what sustainable rest looks like, but I know it’s important. I know that when I give myself space to rest, I also lend myself to more creativity. I know that when I am rested, I regain focus.  I know that when I am rested, I’m a better friend, coach and business owner.

Basically, rest fuels the rest of my life.

God also says that rest is important. Recently, I’ve been taking a class (or “feast” as our instructor calls it) solely dedicated to the subject of Sabbath. To say it’s opened my eyes to God’s design for rest would be an understatement. Here are some things I’m learning:

Sabbath is actually a celebration

Sounds ridiculous, right? When I thought of Sabbath, I honestly equated it to slothfulness or just laying around. Not a party. But Sabbath is actually celebrating God’s restoration of all things.  The entire Bible is one big massive story of creation – marring of creation – and then God’s restoring hands. I don’t know about you, but I feel He’s truly redeeming all things in His time for His glory. And what a beautiful thing to rest in that and celebrate the goodness He has bestowed. What I’m also coming to find is that resting in Him is actually trusting in Him. Though it may be hard at times, it is worth celebrating.

Sabbath is a commandment

For me, the commandments often feel like a massive rule book that I can’t quite measure up to. And if I am really honest, God sometimes feels like a really nasty principal who is always out to get me. (Welcome to the bad theology I’ve been taught).  But actually, the commandments are to guide us into shalom – the way things ought to be, to wholeness, to delight. God hates sin because sin breaks us. He’s not a principal waiting to give us detention or suspend us from His presence. Instead He’s gifting us the commandment of Sabbath because He knows that without it, we will be broken. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be whole. So Sabbath, I shall.

We can afford to Sabbath

I have a habit of running myself ragged. I tell myself it’s because I’m busy and I have a lot of things to do and I’m important and all that nonsense. But really, it comes down to control and a lack of trust that God is moving even when I’m not. It really showcases my ugly arrogance, pride and lack of shalom.  Because instead of trusting that God has it covered, I strive and strain and beat myself up for not measuring up. But really, we can afford to just be. And rest. And trust that God has His hands on it. Working on the weekend, every weekend, won’t make you more successful in the eyes of the Lord. It will make you “ye of little faith”.

So practically, how do we incorporate more Sabbath into our lives?

One, it’s a mindset shift. Two, it’s setting aside the time to rest in the Lord, His promises and the glorious restoration He’s doing. Three, it’s inviting people to celebrate with you over a meal and conversation. Let’s all add a bit more Sabbath in our lives. What say you?
