Nicole, tell us a bit about your job and company!

Currently I am the Inside Sales Manager for PeopleDoc.

People Doc is the industry’s only complete HR Service Delivery Cloud Platform. We make the difficult job of HR easier by providing software to help employees, anytime, anywhere by automating manual processes, digital file management and transforming the way that HR engages with its employees.  I have the honor of working with amazing, talented young professionals who are just starting their sales career.  I coach and develop them to meet and exceed their sales goals and help them to show up every day and be the best version of themselves that they can be. Our Inside Sales team is being prepped to be our future sales leaders and I take great pride in helping people in their sales career journey.

How did you get there?

Well, this is two-fold, LinkedIn and my love affair with sales!  I really studied LinkedIn Job Seeker Premium and figured out how to use the information that LinkedIn provides to help with my career search.  I updated my profile and my skills and carefully selected ten companies that came up in my search where I was in the top 25% of the applicants.  I researched the companies to find out which ones aligned with my values and gave me the ability to use my sales management and coaching skills to help contribute to the growth and development of a team and a company.   I then narrowed down my search and applied.  When I met the team and learned about their values especially “Be Happy” I knew that I wanted to join and help them to build an awesome sales team here in the US

Not sure if you want to hear about my long drawn out journey in sales, but it all started before I could remember, helping my great-grandmother sell her famous pies and cakes.  I remember her telling me that as long as I had something to sell I would never be broke.  I enjoy the thrill and excitement of the sales process and convincing someone to purchase a good, product or service.  Sales is amazing since there is no other job with unlimited bonus potential.  There is also, always an opportunity to learn, grow and evolve.  My first official job was selling women’s shoes at Nordstrom. From there, I became an insurance professional and stayed at a company for 15 years in different sales capacities including sales agent, coach, trainer, supervisor and quality assurance analyst.  During my 15 years, I was able to train, hire and manage hundreds of employees including several President’s Club members and had the opportunity to grow with the company.

What’s kind of hard?

You know what’s hard? Sales is hard.  The objection is hard, hearing no from people everyday can really get my team down. But! It’s up to me to keep them engaged, motivated and focused.  And that can be hard to do everyday.  Managers are humans too and they have crappy days, but our job is to help others come in and do their best all day every day.  It’s not easy but it’s damn sure worth it!

Are there any preconceived notions you’d like to debunk?

That all sales people are sleazy.  Most sales people have your best interest in mind and are working to provide you with the best possible solution based on your needs.  Not everyone is out to get you and take your money. We all have this used car salesmen mentality about sales people.  That’s not the case all the time at all.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to get into your industry/job?

Focus on making a difference – no one cares about what you have to offer unless they know what’s in it for them.  Make sure that your value proposition actually provides value.

In your job, be consultative, The best way to become successful is learning who your prospective clients will be. Find out what their needs are and how your company can provide a solution for those needs.

Oh wait two other things: 1. Crap or get off the pot.  This was something that my great-grandmother taught me in her “kitchen table wisdom”.  This basically means that if you don’t like something, move and do something about it.  2. Do what you love and love what you do. I don’t believe in being miserable and unhappy.  If you’re going to show up everyday, like REALLY show up, you have to have fun doing what you are doing and be passionate about it.

Anything else fun our readers should know about you or your career?

Fun Stuff, hmmm.  I love to take professional-looking pics on my iPhone and I’m obsessed with cooking videos and food on Pinterest.  I love to read, but I have a problem finishing the ten books I read at one time!  But I always read LinkedIn and blog posts and I encourage you to do the same. Knowledge is key!
