Welcome to our weeklyΒ “What I Do Wednesday” series where we highlight people in real jobs making real impact. If you’re thinking about changing careers, this could be a great way to learn if a field is for you! Enjoy!

Tell us a bit about your job and company:

I am the Social Media and Marketing Manager for JBCStyle & JBCconnect. JBCStyle is one of the leading fashion recruiting firms and JBCconnect specializes in creative and tech recruiting. (JV Edit: HEY y’all if you are interested in jobs in fashion, you should 1000% check out this firm and site!) Both companies are housed under JBCHoldings with offices across the country and Europe.

Well that sounds like fun. How did you get there?

I was previously working for a prestigious public relations firm in the city right after graduation. It didn’t take me long to realize that public relations was no longer my passion and digital was something I really wanted to pursue. Through an old contact at a social media agency she knew JBCStyle & JBCconnect were looking for someone to come in house and take on the marketing role. I interviewed fell in love with this scrappy company and here I am almost two years later.

What do you love about your job/industry?

I love that no two days look the same but my end goals stay consistent in my work. As one of two marketing people for the company there is a lot of room for innovation but also improvement. The recruiting industry is something I did not know much about before taking the job, but I have loved learning the ins and outs of the process especially as an outsider. Every day I hear recruiters share stories about how thrilled they are for other people getting their dream job. It goes beyond money and it really is a rewarding experience.

What’s kind of hard?

Unknowns. Social Media is dependent upon good content yes, but at the end of the day if the numbers don’t speak it doesn’t matter. I always have to remind myself it isn’t the end of the world if something doesn’t work or I mess up. I just have to shift gears and learn from the experience. It also helps having a boss that believes this same principal. Nothing I do can break this company.

Are there any preconceived notions you’d like to debunk?

I do not hang out on Instagram all day just because I work with social media. Wouldn’t that be nice? In fact you find me in the analytics 75% of the time then scheduling out the content. That’s about it.

What advice would you give someone who is looking to get into your industry/job?

Experience is important but willingness to learn trumps everything. Most of what I do happens because I’m a self-starter and figured it out.

Anything else fun our readers should know about you or your career?

At JBC, we have the best holiday parties that usually include a DJ and mimosas. Find a company that does that. You deserve it!
